WHY STUDY RUSSIAN AND/OR RUSSIA?

Russian is one of the most widely-spoken languages in the world (the population of Russia is over 148 million people), it is especially used in the former Soviet Union republics (for example, in the Ukraine, Baltic States, Central Asia), in Eastern European countries, and in large Russian communities living in Canada, USA, France and Australia in the context of business and cultural contacts. Russia boasts a unique geographical position: it belongs both to Europe and Asia, and it is often defined as Eurasia. Russia's presence in Asia is expanding rapidly, especially in the form of trade links with Japan, China and Taiwan. Russia Far-East belongs to the Pacific region, and it is not surprising to see Russia as a member of APEC. In a nutshell, Russian studies courses will be of great benefit both to students interested in European Studies and in Asian Studies. The Russian language is one of the most important languages of broader national interest to Australia, too. "The Policy Information (White) Paper: The Australian Language and Literacy Policy (ALLP)" (the Federal Government prepared in 1991) includes Russian in its list of 14 priority languages.
